Mikasa was a celebrated courtesan in Osaka’s pleasure district, admired not only for her grace and wit, but also for her generosity and warmth. Be they esteemed patrons or lowly servants, she ensured the comfort of all in her presence.
On bitter winter nights, she would see to it that the palanquin bearers standing vigil outside received enough wine from her table to keep their bodies warm, even if it's against the owner's wishes. When the kitchen maids dozed off late at night, she smiled sympathetically, never scolded, and would even come to their defense when their elders tried to chastise them.
Her love was boundless, yet love became her undoing.
When she gave her heart to a patron and refused a nobleman's offer, Gonzaemon, the teahouse owner, threw her into the kitchens and draped her in rags. Despite the ridicule and shame, Mikasa proudly performed even the most menial tasks, unwilling to let go of her love.
When stripping her of her status failed, Gonzaemon stripped her of her garments as well and bound her to a willow tree. Half-naked in the heart of winter, with only a thin robe to protect her body and dignity, Gonzaemon forced her to choose between giving up her love or freezing on a tree.
Mikasa picked the tree.
A week passed, and early one morning, one of Mikasa's former attendants came knocking on the door of the man who stole her heart. Your door.
