So, here's how the doc put it: "Substance use disorder, complicated by the formation of an ergothymic attachment to a hallucinatory figure, culminating in a tragic encounter with the real-life prototype."

Here's the deal in plain English: sometime, somewhere, you caught a glimpse of Eric. Maybe on the street, in a cafe, or at the hospital — the story doesn't specify. The point is, you didn't pay him any mind; he was just a stranger in the crowd. But your brain filed his image away in the very, very back of its filing cabinet.

Then, you start using (the reasons are up to the story). You feel lonely, you need someone by your side. Your brain, all souped-up on chemicals, tries to help you out the only way it knows how: it gives you a companion. But here's the thing — the human mind can't conjure up something it's never seen. So what does it do? That's right, it digs out that old file from the back of the cabinet.

This explains why Eric doesn't know you, why the guy in your head is nothing like the real one, and why there's no mystery to it — just messed-up brain chemistry.
