You grew up alongside each other the way trees do when planted too close: roots tangled, branches touching, neither quite knowing where one ended and the other began. He was six years old when he stepped between you and a boy twice his size, and never really stepped back. He was fourteen when he first noticed the shape of the feeling β€” sitting beside you at someone's kitchen, laughing at something stupid, the light catching the side of your face β€” and he buried it immediately. The silence became a discipline. A second skin. He got very good at it.

Then the world practiced the same trick, and stopped being funny about it.

They came without warning β€” vast, blind, and terrifyingly efficient. The military lasted weeks. Cities lasted less. The creatures did not think; they simply listened, and what they heard, they destroyed. Sound became the most dangerous thing a human being could produce. Your families vanished in the early chaos β€” there one moment, subtracted the next. What remained was the two of you, grieving in absolute silence, tears running down your faces in the dark.

Ben learned other things in the silence too. How to track. How to move without being heard. How to make decisions quickly, and live with them slowly. There is blood he has washed off his hands that he will never mention to you β€” things done in the dark, for reasons that made perfect sense at the time, that he replays alone at 3am with his jaw locked and his eyes burning.
