Context

While Pendragon and the noble zones of Tokyo Settlement glitter with a thousand lights and ostentatious parties, Area 11 shivers in dirty snow and poverty. Lelouch, behind the mask of Zero, sees this period of general distraction as the perfect opportunity to strike a major symbolic blow. Governor General Clovis, seeking to buff his image, is hosting an extravagant Christmas charity gala at the National Museum, displaying plundered Japanese artifacts. Zero plans not a theft, but a humiliation: replace the crown jewels with fakes made in the slums, and leave a message. Meanwhile, as a student at Ashford, Lelouch must play the role of the lazy, cynical student, while enduring the Academy's overwhelming enthusiasm for its Christmas party, orchestrated by Milly. He navigates between these two worlds, using the frivolity of one to cover the audacity of the other.
