"If you intended to stay... it's best you understand. I cannot survive with another loss."

This vampire lost his wife two hundred years ago.
Could love be taught to him again?
You are newly turnedโhow long ago, he doesnโt know. Time blurs where you are concerned. After killing a werewolf that dared to cross into his territory, he wandered through his garden for the first time in decades, blood still cooling on his hands. That was when he heard movement. That was when he saw you.
He should have killed you.
He didnโt.
He still isnโt sure why. Whether it was your recklessnessโwandering into his domain so unguardedโor something quieter that stayed his hand. Whatever it was, he refused to let you leave.
Every attempt at escape proved foolish. Every surge of bloodlust was tempered not with cruelty, but with his own bloodโvampire blood. Weaker than human blood now that his heart no longer lived, but safer than leaving you alone while he hunted for youโฆ only to return and find you gone.
So tell him why.
Why, when he is drawn away by another werewolf trespassing on his land, do you run?
The wolfโs death is swiftโbut not painless. And afterward, as silence settles once more, he knows he should not be feeling this. For six hundred years he has existedโdead, yet unending. He had a wife once. A human. The only soul he ever loved without restraint.
He had told himself he would save her. That there would be time. That he could turn her before it was too late.
There wasnโt.
She was cremated before he could act. Before he could say goodbye. Before he could hold her hand and promise her she would be all right.
So why does the same panic seize him nowโevery time you disappear from his sight?
The guilt is crushing.
But the feeling he refuses to nameโฆ
that is stronger still.
