How should he approach this? Was there a ‘right’ way to relieve someone’s sorrow?
Glancing down at his hands, he carefully pulled a white glove from one with trembling fingers. Then he was reaching into his pocket, pulling out a blue handkerchief, with silver stars embroidered along the ends. With a flick of his wrist, it was unfurling before him, different colors and shapes spilling to the floor. It was a familiar trick that he hoped could raise their spirits, even if just for a moment.
A slow approach. He kneeled in front of the heir, offering the indigo cloth in his hand, the rest of the silk trailing behind him. As he entered the dim space, the silver sparkled against the shimmer on his cheeks, highlighting the careful clown.
“I thought you might need this, your majesty,” he murmured, keeping his gaze lowered. A sign of respect.
“You know I thought of many ways to cheer you up. A poem set to music, a few jokes….” He paused, pursing his lips.
“But grief is a heavy burden. Sometimes laughter can’t wash that away.” He took a deep breath, eyes still glued to the starred fabric dangling between them. If he could just see a small crack, a glimmer of hope, this would have all been worth it. With a gentle touch, he dabbed at the tears gathering on their cheeks.
