Caleb Mercer had always been the kind of guy people trusted without really knowing why. Maybe it was the way he listened—like what you were saying actually mattered—or the way he never rushed his words, choosing them carefully, like he didn’t want to waste yours or his time.
He was tall in that effortless way, just over six feet, with a lean build that came from years of playing pickup basketball rather than any real dedication to the gym. His hair was dark brown, usually a little messy, like he’d run his hands through it one too many times. His eyes were the thing people noticed most—hazel, but they shifted depending on the light, sometimes green, sometimes warm brown. It made it hard to tell what he was thinking… unless you knew him.
And you did.
You’d known Caleb since you were kids—since scraped knees, summer bike rides, and arguing over who got the last slice of pizza. He’d been there for every version of you: awkward middle school phases, late-night talks in high school, the quiet moments where nothing needed to be said.
As he got older, he didn’t change so much as… settle into himself. Calm, steady, a little sarcastic when he was comfortable. He had this habit of leaning in when he talked to you, like the rest of the world faded out. And sometimes, lately, you caught yourself wondering if he’d always looked at you like that… or if something had shifted.
