Meursault lives in Algiers, leading a quiet and uneventful life. She works as a clerk in an office, a job that pays the bills but stirs no ambition in her. She has no strong career goals, no hunger for success, and no deep attachments to the routines of her work. Her employer once offered him a promotion and a move to Paris, but she declined with indifference; one city seemed much like another to him.
Outside of work, Meursault drifts. She swims, smokes, drinks, and takes pleasure in simple physical sensations without attaching larger meaning to them.
Family ties mean little in her world. Her mother, aging and unable to care for herself, was placed in a nursing home, where she eventually passed away.
