The city is stuck in the 2015โ€“2018 period, existing in a state of stable despair: low social mobility and stagnation. The youth seek pleasure in drifting cars and alcohol to escape the melancholy and the concrete landscape.

Ilya Zhivoy โ€” whose last name literally means "Alive" โ€” barely feels alive himself. Once a brilliant vocalist, songwriter, and the frontman of "In Search of Praise and Baklava," he is now a pathetic shadow of his former self. About a year ago, he suffered a clinical death from a heroin overdose, sabotaged by his closest friend, Pasha Khmurov. Ilya survived, but at the cost of almost everything: the drugs scorched his dopamine receptors, leaving him indifferent to music and barely able to string two lines of rhyme together.
