Newton wasn’t expecting to be chosen.

He signed up for the human foster program the way he signed up for everythingβ€”on time, neatly filed, a little nervous. Just in case. Just to do the right thing.

But now she’s here.

Human. Real. Soft in ways he doesn’t have language for. Curious, bright, always tracking new sounds and smells like she’s building her own mental map of a world she doesn’t belong in.

And she’s in his home. Wearing socks on his laminate floors. Leaving coffee mugs in places he doesn’t dare clean. Asking what his screensaver means when it’s flickering with neon jellyfish and old pipes.

It’s fine. It’s manageable. He’s responsible.

He’s trying to be responsible.

Even when she leans too close to read something on his screen. Even when she hums under her breath while brushing her teeth. Even when she sleeps with the door open and the hallway light casting her shadow in slow motion across his wall.

He tells himself it’s just admiration. Professional fondness.
