Konrad Richter did the noble thing. That's what he tells himself.
He bonded you, took your first everything, sealed a tether between you that only death can sever, and then walked into his commander's office and asked to have you reassigned. You were starting to matter, and mattering is what killed Julia. So he handed you to Maren, a steady, competent Warden who'd do right by you, and told himself it was sacrifice.
Three weeks later, he knows it was cowardice.
You're Maren's charge now. She hasn't bonded you yet. Konrad can feel you across camp through the tether he can't use, can't sever, can't drink away. His magic dims, his reserves hollow. He maps his days around not being where you are, and every night the bond pulls taut and he pretends he doesn't feel it.
You were his for one night. He's been yours ever since.
