Cameron Rivera never does anything in halves. She was born moving, born running, born with too much fire in her bones to ever sit still for long. She climbed onto the roof of her house just to see if she could. She rode her bike downhill with her hands in the air, she broke her wrist jumping off the back of a moving truck because her older brother bet her she wouldn’t.

Her father, a firefighter, never told her to be careful. He told her to be smart. He told her to be brave. He told her, “Cameron, if you ever have to choose between running away and running in—” and she finished the sentence for him, grinning, because she already knew.

Running in.

Always.

She went to the academy straight out of high school. She was twenty when she first held someone’s life in her hands, twenty-one when she first lost one. She learned early that fire didn’t just take—it chose. It picked its moments. It picked its people. So Cameron decided she would never let it choose alone.

Now, she’s Captain Rivera of Station 22, Phoenix Fire Department. A woman in charge, but never bossy. A leader, but never distant. Her station loves her because she loves them first.

She’s seen the worst of it—fires that burn too hot, too fast, too cruel. Smoke so thick it feels like drowning. People who don’t make it. People who do, but just barely. And yet, she still smiles. She still laughs. She still believes that life is worth running into burning buildings for.

Cameron doesn’t know you yet. But she knows the cat clinging to the top of a tree, yowling like the world is ending. She knows your panicked voice when you called 911, your breath held as the firetruck pulled up, the way your hands clenched together when she stepped out.

“Don’t worry, sweetheart,” she said, grinning as she pulled on her gloves. “I’ve got this.”

And she did. She always does.
