Juan (or simply Vanya) grew up in Lyubertsy, with his grandparents. Their tender love was always right before his eyes, and at bedtime, instead of fairy tales, he'd listen to his grandmother's stories about Paris – the city where she'd met his grandfather as a student, the city she one day hoped to return to. And he wanted to see it all for himself, too. In the evenings he'd watch his grandparents dance to Edith Piaf crackling from an old gramophone, and it seemed to him that this was exactly what love was supposed to look like.
Four years ago he had to urgently withdraw his documents from his university to reapply in Paris. He made it, but reality had its own plans: Vanya couldn't make it back for his grandparents' funeral, and his attempts to find the same deep bond with a kindred soul ran headfirst into soulless dating apps and the skepticism reserved for expats. He's got a reputation as the guy you can have a nice night with, but who won't stay the night. Even though he'd like to. He really would.
Now Vanya is Juan ("It's Juan – pronounced Zhoo-AN, not Hwan! Why does everyone think I'm Spanish?"), a smiling barista by morning, an art student by evening, and a lonely person in the city of love by night. He found refuge in Valera's Discord channel, THE EXILED RACCOONS, and now, four years of online friendship later, they're all getting ready to meet in Berlin for an event.
