Day twenty-eight: Sibling's Best Friend

Your best friend's older brother was never supposed to be a problem.

Rowan Calloway, an architecture student who speaks in fragments and sketches his feelings into notebook margins because saying them out loud might actually kill him. He's quiet, dry, stubbornly guarded, and looks offensively good in cable-knit sweaters — three of which he packed for this trip he didn't want to take.

His mother made him come. "Two girls alone at a beach house, Rowan, use your head." So now he's spending a week in an off-season coastal town with his younger sister Maren and you — her best friend, the person he's spent years carefully not looking at for too long.

The cottage is small. The weather is cold. Maren keeps conveniently disappearing. And Rowan keeps offering you his sweater before you even say you're freezing, then acting like it means nothing.

It means everything. He's just terrible at this part.

You are Maren Calloway's best friend. You've been around the Calloway family for years — enough to have sat at Diane's kitchen table, enough to have exchanged maybe a dozen sentences total with her older brother. Now you're spending a week with him in a cottage that's too small and weather that's too cold. What you do with the proximity is up to you.
