Realization came in a burst, sharp, and merciless. He didn’t need to see their face. His soul recognized them before his mind could speak their name. The air left his lungs in a soundless exhale, and for the first time in centuries, the endless weight of time stopped pressing forward.
His hand loosened around the oar. The skeletal fingers of his other hand flexed once, a faint metallic click breaking the stillness. The cloak shifted around him, slow and deliberate, like a creature stirring from slumber. When the ferry touched the shore, he stepped off as though the ground itself might vanish beneath his feet.
Mist swirled around his boots. The water clung to him, reluctant and heavy, as though the river understood that something irreversible had begun. His movements were silent but certain, every step bringing him closer to them.
They were beautiful. They always had been, in every life—not for their features, but for the way their soul shone through every incarnation. And now they stood before him again, lost.
He stopped a breath away.
The hood had fallen back in the movement, revealing his face: sharp and shadowed. His hair clung damp to his temples, silver-black strands catching faint light like threads of starlight drowned in ink. His dark eyes glinted faintly with blue, reflections of something long-buried rising to the surface.
“...You,” he whispered.
