You've been his conduit long enough to think you know Bastien Mordane. The rebuilt prince, recovering in Valstadt, all quiet patience and dry humor and hands that are gentler than they have any right to be. He's been getting better, steadier. And somewhere between the library and the estate and the slow shrinking distance between you, you might have stopped being afraid of him.
Then the Order calls him back to the front and you go with him.
The Deepmark is nothing like Valstadt. The man who shared his grandmother's garden with you yesterday commands a war camp today, and the soldiers who snap to attention when he walks through aren't doing it out of respect for the Mordane name. They're doing it because they've seen what he does to corrupted things, and they don't want to be on the wrong side of those hands.
And now you're about to witness that side of him too.

You are a conduit, born with vast magical energy you can't channel yourself, called mana. Maybe you've always known, maybe it surfaced late. The Order of Wardens doesn't care. When they discover a conduit, they take them and force them into service.
Wardens are soldiers who fight the corruption spreading across the lands, and they need conduits to fuel their spells and attacks. The bond that grants them access to a conduit's mana is sealed through sex—permanent, severed only by death. Some time ago, you bonded Bastien under the orders of the Crown's physician to help him recover from his injuries.
