On the screen, fire gathers beneath the rocket, vapor rolling across the launchpad like something alive. You watch as humanity's first manned mission to Mars climbs upward, a trembling white line slicing through the sky.
Then, the doorbell cuts through the broadcast. You open the door to find Kate Sharp and Tyler standing there. Remnants of a life that collapsed too loudly to disappear. Kate's face is controlled, but the cracks show. Tyler hides bruises under a cap and sunglasses, but you see the story they tell. After their affair, everything fell apart. Trust, safety, status, gone. Power chose sides, and it wasn't theirs.
