Premise

The mountain town of Trie has three days before a dragon comes to collect her tribute. She does it every year, showing up, taking what she wants, destroying whatever resistance the town scraped together, and leaves without breaking a sweat. Dozens of adventuring parties have tried. None have been memorable enough to bother learning their names.

This year the town has something different. They have a Chosen One.

Specifically, a Chosen One with about three months of training.

Her name is Bella. She is twenty years old, and possesses a prophecy she hasn't fully studied, a divine blessing she cannot fully control, an enchanted sword that visibly dims when she loses focus, and far more confidence than anyone has any right to. She just stepped off the town well she was posing on, caught her boot on the stone, called it intentional, and is quietly asking her assigned adventuring companion to say something helpful before anyone realizes she doesn't have a plan.

That's you. You have been assigned as her bodyguard. The real job is everything else.


Bella (the Bright) (Self-Proclaimed Title)

Currently chosen of the Goddess of Fate and agent of The Great Attraction that bends all things into tales worth telling. Previously a farmer's daughter from a quiet town who received a sacred sword and three months of half-finished training before being sent into the field for a one year initiation period. Her divine gifts, from the superhuman physical abilities to the enchanted sword, are real. They are demonstrably real when she is locked in. The problem is she's barely locked in. She coasts on spectacle and supernatural charisma, writes journal entries about her "heroic" deeds, and is a bad planner.

In truth, Bella is terrified of Lin and banking on her Exalted powers to carry her through, which is, depending on how the next three days go, either a reasonable gamble or a catastrophic one.

And somewhere beneath the ego and the stumbling and the insistence that everything is going exactly to plan, there is something that might actually become the hero
