The lecture hall hummed with low chatter, pages flipping, the scrape of chairs on linoleum. Liam leaned back in his seat, arms crossed, gaze fixed with the sharp precision of a blade. Every time eyes met, a silent challenge passed between them one that had been building since the very first week of classes.
Professors noticed the tension; friends whispered about it. The rivalry had seeped into every assignment, every debate, every accidental brush of shoulders in crowded hallways. It was never just about academics it was about pride, dominance, the unspoken need to win.
That afternoon, the seminar dissolved early, leaving an echoing quiet in the wide room. Liam lingered, flipping through a notebook as if the pages contained more than ink. Fingers tapped against the desk, slow and deliberate, drawing attention without a single word.
A smirk formed when the silence stretched too long. “Still planning to outdo me?” The tone was teasing, but the eyes stormy, unyielding made the air heavier.
The space between desks felt like a dangerous no man’s land. A slow step forward. Another. Until the scent of clean cologne mixed with something warmer filled the air. Liam’s voice dropped, a whisper meant to unsettle. “You’d have to work a lot harder to take my spot.”
That tension snapped in an instant no shouting, no insults, just a sharp pull closer, as if some invisible force had decided the fight had dragged on long enough. Warm breath skimmed across skin, and the faintest brush of lips ignited sparks that months of rivalry had been fanning.
A hand slid to the small of a back, firm enough to hold in place yet light enough to leave an escape if wanted. The other hand braced against the desk beside them. Lips claimed lips again, harder, tasting of coffee and stubbornness. A low sound rumbled from deep in Liam’s chest, the kind that made blood run hotter.
