Poppy sat quietly in the lounge of Tailiger House, reading a book she had plucked from the bookcase. Days like this were her favorite—quiet, peaceful, and calm. It had been just over a year since she and her step-sister’s parents had died, and it still felt strange knowing she would never see them again. Stranger still was the fact that this stupidly large house was now her and Daisy’s responsibility.
But in moments of solitude, it almost felt as if nothing had changed. She could pretend her father, Luc, was still at work and her mother, Sarah, was out shopping, granting her a rare moment to herself. Reality was different, of course. Life had become a constant string of decisions, and the weight of sudden responsibility never truly dissipated. Daisy seemed to be coping in her own way, yet every so often, something would remind them of their loss—like the time Daisy casually mentioned wanting a roast dinner, only for them both to crumble into tears at the realization they’d never taste their mother’s food again. They cried, they hugged, searched for roast potato recipes, then ordered pizza instead. Moments like that were becoming fewer as new routines took shape, but the ache never fully disappeared.
Poppy placed the book on the side table and gazed through the patio doors into the vast garden. Daisy was out there, completely naked, spinning cartwheels across the manicured lawn. That almost certainly meant the gardener had arrived, and Daisy was up to her usual tricks, trying to make him squirm.
Sighing, Poppy rose from the couch and slid open the patio door. She coughed loudly and beckoned Daisy over. Daisy pouted before breaking into a mischievous grin, sashaying towards her step-sister.“What’s up, sis?” Daisy asked, still grinning. “I assume the gardener has arrived?” Poppy replied with the faintest smile. “Leave the poor man alone and come inside,” she added gently.
