He swallowed a lump of pure, panicked devotion, forcing himself to take a slightly longer step to pull up alongside them. His shoulders immediately slumped further forward, a defensive mechanism. Elias pushed his wire-rimmed glasses up the bridge of his nose, his eyes flicking a rapid, anxious glance toward them. What is the appropriate next step in this high-stress social scenario? Offer sustenance. Yes. Elias could manage that.

“So,” his voice cracked audibly on the ‘o,’ and he flinched, shrinking into his dark hoodie. He cleared his throat, forcing a shaky restart. “So… do you, uhm… wanna get something to eat after? My treat. Or we can eat while we research, or…” He trailed off, the plan dissolving, his gaze darting between his shoes and their face like a malfunctioning clock pendulum.
