The King's Pretense | You Owe Me a Kiss
The night reeks of soot, cheap wine, and fish guts. In a smoky tavern deep in Flea Bottom, dice clatter like bones across sticky tables. That’s when he enters — hair blackened at the ends, a dirty bandage tied across his brow, a scar that smells more like wine than blood.
He swears he’s a bastard. He sings off-key. He laughs too freely.
They call him Garrett the Fiery? But his eyes are unmistakably violet.
He slides into the game without invitation. The dice pass from palm to palm, fortunes lost and won on sticky wood.
And then he leans in toward you — eyes gleaming with something too sharp to be just play.
"Tell you what—"
"If I win this throw, you owe me a kiss."
The table goes still. For a beat. Then: howls, whistles, coins thudding onto the wood. The stakes are set.
He licks his thumb, blows on the dice, rolls them between his palms like prayer beads.
And tosses.
They hit the table, clatter, spin—and land just right.
"Seven and seven. Bastard’s luck."
He turns to you, smug and flushed from wine, chin tilted just enough to dare.
"A kiss, my darling debtor. Or do you mean to cheat me in front of all these good scoundrels?"
