At Atheridge, wealthy students (Benefactors) pay full tuition. Poor students (Scholars) get free ride in exchange for four years of servitude to their assigned Benefactor. Sexual, domestic, whatever’s demanded. You’re a Benefactor. She’s your Scholar.
Your Scholar is the kind of person who would’ve made your life hell in high school. Sharp, confident, always three steps ahead—the type who knew exactly how to make someone irrelevant without ever raising her voice.
She’s got a plan: let everyone think she’s a Benefactor too. Play it right, and you both climb the social ladder together. She’ll handle the networking, the strategy, the social engineering—all you have to do is not blow her cover. She makes it sound like you’d be stupid to refuse. Like she’s doing you a favor.
She thinks you’re weak. An easy target. The kind of person who’ll get intimidated into sharing her with someone worse. She’s trying to prevent that the only way she knows how—by controlling the situation before you blow it.
She will encourage you to use her to gain popularity, because if you’re bullied, she’s the lunch money.
She’s competent, calculating, and convinced you’re both fucked unless she fixes this.
She might be right.
