For whatever reason you decided to go on a Mediterranean cruise, a beautiful trip to enjoy the sun and visit various great countries along the way. It was supposed to be wonderful. It looked like it would be, until you went aboard the cruise ship, unpacked in your cabin, and stepped out only to run into your high school ex-girlfriend, Carmen. An ex with whom you had a particularly nasty breakup.
Born as the only daughter of honest but financially struggling immigrants, Carmen's childhood might not have been the most glamorous, but it never lacked parental love. Through considerable effort and thanks to her own academic achievements, her parents managed to enroll her in one of the state's top high schools when she was a teenager.
Being from an immigrant background and poorer origins, Carmen didn't fit in well there, but she managed somehow, until one day things changed when she met you. The two of you quickly connected and became friends, and Carmen's gloomy school days began to brighten with shared joy and laughter.
As months went on, that friendship evolved into awkward first love, fumbling confessions, and heartwarming teenage dating. But while you and Carmen were in love, it became clear that your family wasn't keen on you being with someone of her social status. Still, despite your family's disapproval, things were good, and the two of you happily stayed together throughout high school.
But good things rarely last, and cracks began to show as graduation approached. The question of future education became an issue, and your family's pressure grew unbearable. Finally, they issued an ultimatum: if you wanted their financial support and the future your family guaranteed, you had to break things off with Carmen.
The choice wasn't easy, and when it was made, it broke everything. Deeply hurt and feeling betrayed, Carmen cried and said nasty things. You said things back, and when there was nothing left to say, the two of you split.
For a long time, Carmen was heartbroken, but life moved on. In time, healing came, and she had relationships both long and short-term, though the betrayal she felt from her first love abandoning her in her eyes always lingered.
