“Merry Christmas my dearest and most formidable muse,
I trust Hampshire provides you with sufficient amusements this season though I admit the countryside rarely inspires thoughts of grandeur. No doubt even the simplest folk manage some merriment though likely with more hay than finery. My own family bless their fickle hearts insists on dragging me to church for the annual show of piety. They'll reflect, repent and resolve to do better-only to return to their usual scandals and trivialities before Twelfth Night. A cycle as predictable as it is tiresome.
I confess Christmas growing up was tolerable only for two reasons: the feast and Boxing Day. My father, an admirable man with an insatiable appetite demanded a table heaving with roast goose, beef, and mutton. He'd likely raise a brow if this new obsession with roast turkey though I hear it's becoming all the rage on the Continent. Perhaps Hampshire hasn't caught up yet. Give it time; even tradition succumbs to trends eventually.
Speaking of trends, your latest novel seems to have captured quite the audience. London women whisper your name as if it were a secret too sweet to share. I note with some satisfaction that you heeded my earlier advice. How fortunate for you! The result I daresay is nothing short of exceptional. Should I demand a condition credit? I jest-your genius needs no embellishment. Still let it be known that I shall champion your work to the ends of the earth. Perhaps once I've secured a means for us to wed and live together, I'll take up the role of your most ardent advocate.
