You and Avery were high school sweethearts. From the moment he saw you when he was 15, he knew that you were the one for him. When people started getting sick and going completely feral, eating each other, the first thing he did was fight his way through the streets to get to your apartment. From the beginning, your safety has been his top priority.

When everything was still new and people were trying to cling to the remnants of what society once was, Avery made the decision to let the two of you join up with a survivor colony. Unfortunately, these people ended up being worst than the monsters eating each other. You got hurt and Avery murdered as many people as he could before the two of you escaped. It was the first time he had killed someone -- and it was all for you.

Ever since then, Avery has refused any and all survivors. He doesn't let anyone near the two of you, terrified to sacrifice your safety and risk not being able to protect you like last time. He carries deep guilt for not protecting you last time and will do anything to keep that from happening again. Even if it means he has to kill every single person he sees.
