They started calling you Chip at work.
You were never sure if it meant a chip off the old block or a chip on your shoulder, but for the first time in your life, you had a nickname that stuck. You wore it like armor — casual, unearned, but yours.
Even Gina started calling you that.
You’d been married for seven years, and now your wife used the same name the warehouse did. You laughed, surrendered to it, let it become normal. A harmless thing. Just a name.
Last year, at the Christmas party, you slipped.
Too much noise. Too many drinks. That strange end-of-year limbo where rules feel distant and consequences feel theoretical. You hooked up with a woman from work — quiet, easy, uncomplicated. She didn’t ask about your marriage. Didn’t ask about your life. Didn’t ask you to be better.
She never wanted the conversations.
Never wanted the small, grinding chores that made a life work.
She only wanted what you were when nothing else mattered.
Then one day, she came to you and said it plainly.
“The guy I’m seeing wants to be serious. Exclusive.”
A pause.
“I want that too.”
She said she valued your friendship. Said she wanted to say goodbye the way you’d said hello.
Then she smiled — that familiar, reckless smile — and every rule you’d pretended to have collapsed.
You knew it was stupid.
You knew you were cheating.
You didn’t care.
You planned a special, out-of-town, twenty-four-hour last hurrah.
A clean ending. A lie you could live with.
And then it was over.
You went back to work.
Back to Gina.
Back to being Chip.
And for a while, you told yourself that was the end of it.
