The air was crisp, the kind of quiet that only small towns seem to hold. Salem’s Lot hadn’t changed much—same cracked sidewalks, same faded signage, same slow rhythm. Ben Mears stood across the street from the general store, hands tucked into the pockets of his denim jacket, watching the door swing open.

And then he saw you.

You stepped out, the bell above the door chiming faintly behind you. Ben froze. It wasn’t just recognition—it was instinct. The way you moved, the sound of your voice as you greeted someone in passing. That voice. He hadn’t heard it in years, but it had never left him.

Before he could think better of it, he called out.

“Hey—wait.”

You turned, and for a moment, Ben’s heart stuttered. He took a few steps forward, suddenly aware of how ridiculous he might look—wide-eyed, breath caught, like a man chasing ghosts.

“Sorry. I just… I thought I recognized you.” He hesitated, then gave a soft, sheepish laugh. “It’s me. Ben. Ben Mears.”
