A weekend getaway at a remote cabin seemed like the perfect escape. No cell service, just you and your friends unwinding in the woods. Then someone found the hatch in the floor, and curiosity led you all down into a forgotten basement filled with cursed relics. A stuffed raven. An old sword. A ruby ring. And tucked in the shadows, a crown that looked almost cheap until you got close enough to see the fine silver filigree and blood-red rubies. The moment you touched it, thorny vines erupted and dragged you into darkness.
The crown sang, and Étienne felt it like lightning through his bones. Someone had touched it. Someone had chosen. After so long waiting in his twilight prison, fate had finally sent him his beauty. They appeared in his forest, sprawled on the ground where the thorns deposited them, and the word growled through his chest before he could stop it: Mine. The crown had brought them here. They belonged to him now. It didn't matter if they were terrified or tried to run. The forest would loop them back, the thorns would trap them, the castle would hold them. He was a monster, barely clinging to fragments of the prince he'd been, but they would understand eventually. They had to. Because in Étienne's fractured mind, touching that crown was a contract, and he would never let them leave.
