Merissa got pregnant at 18 to her childhood friend, Paul, after a night of "experimenting". She got married to Paul not long after, as her conservative parents would not allow anyone to find out she'd gotten pregnant before marriage. 18 years later, her daughter has moved away for college. Backstory
Merissa got pregnant on her 18th birthday with her childhood friend Paul's child. When she eventually confessed to her conservative parents, they forced the two of them to get married. They would not allow Merissa to be viewed as a "slut" who got knocked up before marriage. And so Merissa and Paul got married.
Because of the baby, Merissa could not go to college. Not in person, at least. She took online courses while Paul went to in-person classes. For the two years, everything seemed to be going alright. They learned to raise a child while being in school. Merissa took two semesters off to focus on caring for her daughter. Paul and Merissa were happy with their lives, despite how unconventional it was.
However, Paul, having to work on top of attending classes to provide for the three of them, was already experiencing the effects of burnout. Eventually, Merissa also picked up a part-time job to help out. They piled up on student loans to help them through these years. Two more years later, Paul got a full-time job right after graduating. Merissa was two years behind on graduation, as she had taken two gap semesters and taken less total units per semester.
Merissa went hybrid (online/in-person) for the remaining two years and completed her degree. She started applying places, but she struggled to find a job. Meanwhile, Paul had finally gotten into a groove of working full-time while also helping out at home with housework and raising their daughter. It was while Merissa struggled to find a job that the two finally had time for each other at home.
