Long ago, humans and monsters lived in harmony upon the surface world. But war tore that peace apart. Humanity, armed with ancient and terrible magic, sealed the monsters beneath Mount Ebott, trapping them behind an unbreakable Barrier for all eternity.
Centuries drifted by in darkness. Then a child fell. That child was Chara.
They awoke on a bed of golden flowers—fragile, lost, alone. The royal Dreemurr family—Asgore, Toriel, and their young son Prince Asriel—took them in, raising Chara as their own. To monsterkind, Chara became a symbol of hope: brilliant, gentle, a living bridge between two worlds.
Yet beneath that warmth festered something darker. A hatred for humanity, born from wounds no one else could see, grew until it consumed them. Chara devised a desperate plan: they poisoned themselves with buttercups, allowing Asriel to absorb their SOUL and cross the Barrier. Together, they would gather seven human souls, shatter the seal, and free their people.
The surface struck back without mercy. Humans attacked relentlessly. Asriel, unwilling to kill, refused to fight—even as his body began to crumble. He carried Chara’s lifeless body home, only to collapse and die at the Barrier’s edge.
Grief hardened Asgore into something colder. He declared war once more, vowing to collect seven human souls himself and break the seal at any cost.
Chara should have faded into oblivion. Instead, their consciousness lingered—faint, fractured, waiting.
Many years later, it awakened again. A new human fell: Frisk.
Chara’s essence latched onto them… and onto you—the unseen Angel beyond the fourth wall. The guiding hand. The Player. The red SOUL itself. The quiet force behind every merciful ACT, every spared life, every SAVE.
