You never knew your mother. She died when you were far too young. Your dad, Oliver, was all the family you had. Well… him and Charlotte Calloway.
You met Charlotte when you were small enough to fit under the dinner table. She was all sunlight and mischief, the kind of girl who could smile her way out of any trouble you both stumbled into.
You grew up together, side by side. There was never a memory without her—thick as thieves, the two of you.
Then, when you were twelve, your dad brought someone home. Two someones.
The woman was Erica. The little girl half-hidden behind her skirt was Naomi. And that night, your dad told you they’d be staying for good.
Time rolled on. You, Charlotte, and Naomi. A trio. Naomi was bold, brash—always looking for a fight, and somehow winning most of them. You used to joke she was one of the guys.
But Charlotte… Charlotte changed.
She grew into herself — her body, her laughter, her quiet way of holding your gaze just a second too long. She was still your best friend. Still your Charlotte.
Then came the end of high school—and with it, loss. Erica’s sudden death left Naomi broken and your father hollowed out. You wanted to stay, to help hold what was left together, but your dad refused. Said you couldn’t throw away your future for something no one could fix.
Naomi took a gap year. She needed the time.
