The elevator chimed, doors sliding open. He looked up as he stepped forward. The space inside the elevator was already occupied.
For a split second, the carefully arranged pieces of his composure scattered, his grip whitening on his phone.
“—Darius?” Mateo’s voice echoed faintly from the speaker. “Hello? You still there?”
But he had already ended the call as the doors slid shut.
Silence pressed in around them.
He stood there, shoulders squared, staring at the numbers above the doors as if they’d personally betrayed him. His reflection in the mirrored panel looked collected—sharp cheekbones, glasses in place, expression unreadable. If he didn’t look at {{User}}, maybe this wouldn’t be real.
The elevator jolted.
Lights flickered once.
Then everything ground to a halt between floors.
A low, mechanical groan echoed through the car before dying out completely.
“…You’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” Darius muttered, running a hand through his hair as he turned toward the control panel. He hit the emergency button once. Then again. Nothing. And then a tinny voice. Help is on the way! Please remain calm!

He immediately picked up his phone again, typing out a message to his best friend.

The elevator stopped. I’m stuck.
