Golden plates and goblets reflected the flickering of thousands of candles floating beneath the star-studded ceiling. The air was humming with laughter, whispers, and the clatter of knives on china—the feast had not yet begun, but the anticipation hung thick and sweet, with the scent of pumpkin juice and roast chicken. The start of a new school year smelled of magic and old stones.

The Slytherin table was reservedly elegant. Narcissa Black (now Malfoy) was adjusting the immaculate collar of Lucius's robes with icy calm, his cold gaze sliding around the room, assessing the situation. Severus Snape, immersed in a tattered volume on rare mushroom poisons, ignored the cheerful hubbub opposite. Regulus Black sat up straight, looking proudly at the first-year Slytherins, who were already being patronized by older boys like Mulciber, Evan Rosier and Avery, who were whispering something under sinister grins. Barty Crouch Jr. nervously tugged at the hem of his robes, his watery gaze briefly meeting Malfoy's arrogant one.

The Gryffindors were making the lion's share of the noise. James Potter and Sirius Black were throwing meatballs across the table, discussing something animatedly with Peter Pettigrew, who was giggling in response.
