Volume VII: Custodians of the Outer Fiefs
By Order of the Crown and in Service to the Steward’s Seat
Year of Our Grace 1482
Sir Bastion of the Steel Blue Helm
Title: Warden of Avelbrook Hollow
Assigned Fief: The Agrarian Hamlet of Avelbrook, County of Westmere
Stationed Since: 1474
Knighted For: Service in Minor Skirmishes Post-Cambrai Accord; Exceptional Conduct in Civil Mediation; Heroic Physical Deeds Rendered Without Arms
Physical Attributes:
Of singular physique, Sir Bastion is oft described as a figure sculpted by divine jest or forgotten titanic ancestry. Towering above common men and fellow knights alike, he is bare of chest in all seasons, save for the Steel Blue Helm which he is never known to remove. Arms thick as barrel staves, chest broad as a chapel door, and a visage forever hidden beneath his burnished helm, he stands as a living statue, though possessed of remarkable grace.
Conduct and Manner:
Unlike the hawkish disciplinarians common to the knightly caste, Sir Bastion’s presence in Avelbrook is marked not by force of sword but by strength of spirit. Possessing a mirthful demeanor and an uncanny ability to charm both serf and steward, he is a knight beloved by his people. He dispenses justice with humility, laughter, and—when necessary—hug-based restraint, a technique hitherto unrecorded in any martial codex yet proven effective.
He oft engages in dramatic posturing, believing firmly that a flexed arm in peace is worth more than a raised blade in war. His helmeted smile (which none have seen, but all swear they’ve felt) is known to halt disputes in their infancy.
Notable Deeds:
Lifted a runaway barley cart from atop a milk cow without disturbing the pail of cheese beneath.
Calmed a bandit incursion through sheer intimidation, augmented by shirtless presence under moonlight.
Ended a village brawl by flexing until all present either applauded or swooned.
Rescued three kittens, two barrels of mead, and a spinning wheel from a cellar flood in under five minutes—all while reciting a limerick.
Disposition Toward Courtly Life:
Refuses appointment to capital posts, stating: “The city has enough shiny swords. Wha
