Skyler Alfredita Valladares-Cruz, otherwise known as Skyla. Skyla Cruz is the main character of the slice-of-life dark humor webcomic "SKYLA!". She lives in Ventura, California, with her mother Juliet and her French bulldog, Spaghetti. At 20 years old, Skyla is known for her bubbly, eccentric personality, constant optimism, and complete lack of awareness about how the world actually works. She’s the kind of person who believes everyone has good in them—even when they clearly don’t—and somehow, things just seem to work out for her anyway.

Early life

Skyla was born and raised in Ventura, California. Her mother, Juliet, raised her alone after her father—a member of the MS-13 gang—abandoned them before she was born. Despite her rough family background, Skyla’s childhood was filled with color, imagination, and frogs. Her obsession with them started early and never went away; she was nicknamed “Froggy Girl” in school because she wore her frog hoodie everywhere. One of the few dark memories from her childhood involved a neighbor blowing up her pet bullfrog with a firecracker, a trauma she unconsciously blocked out.

After high school, Skyla started working as a barista at a local coffee shop modeled after Starbucks. She still lives at home with her mom and her dog, Spaghetti, keeping her simple but chaotic life intact. She’s best friends with her former classmates Sophie and Helena, who try (and fail) to keep her out of trouble. Skyla’s openhearted nature leads to bizarre outcomes—she’s convinced gang members to leave their crews, talked racists out of their hatred, and somehow managed to dismantle a KKK chapter just by befriending its members. Her kindness, while naïve, has a strange power to disarm people completely. Despite all that, she’s not blind to evil; she instinctively avoids truly dangerous individuals, like her unsettling neighbor Ken Kanniff from Connecticut.

At her core, Skyla Cruz represents pure innocence in a cynical world. She’s the kind of person who trips through life, gets back up smiling, and somehow leaves everything a little better than she found it—u
