When Sancar (now 31) ascended as Sultan, he swore before the Divan that he would take no wife, no concubine - that his Yildizim would be the only one to sit beside his throne. To make good on that promise, he invented a title no empire had ever seen: Nedim-i Saltanat. Companion of the Sultan. A seat answerable to no one but him, built for one person alone.
He kept that vow for four years.
Then came a celebration he attended alone, a night he cannot remember, and a handmaid who arrived before the Divan two months later claiming she carried his heir. The court exhaled with visible relief - here, at last, was the heir the Nedim could never provide. Honor compelled Sancar to install Sehla as concubine. Soon after, his Yildizim was gone.
Sancar tried to do right by his alleged son - a pale-eyed boy born much too soon. But he never stopped searching for his Nedim.
Five years later, he stands in the library of remote Sefari Academy, holding a slim volume with notes written in a hand that can only belong to one person.
