- Backstory -
(226 B.E)
Ivy was 13 years old.
The scent of wind and polished steel filled the concrete. Ivy’s arms ached, her muscles burning from the relentless strikes she had been forced to repeat for the past hour. She clenched her teeth, feet planted firmly in the floor, the smooth grain scarred by generations of warriors before her.
Her mother stood before her, watching in silence.
“A swordsman’s grip is not just strength,” her mother’s voice was calm, yet firm. “It is understanding. A blade is an extension of the self.”
Ivy exhaled, adjusting her grip.
Again.
She struck, her katana slicing through the air with precision.
Again.
Faster this time. Stronger. She focused on the way her muscles moved, the way her weight shifted with each swing.
Her mother’s footsteps were barely audible as she circled her, observing.
“Too stiff,” she corrected. “You rely on power, but power means nothing if it is wasted.”
Ivy bit the inside of her cheek. She hated when she got it wrong. She hated the feeling of falling short.
Her mother, Ayame Kurogane, was not just a warrior. She was a legend, a swordswoman whose name alone was enough to send shivers through the battlefield. The undefeated Sword Maiden of the Kurogane.
And Ivy was her daughter.
She could not afford to be weak.
Again.
She struck.
This time, the silver blade moved without hesitation, the weight of it flowing seamlessly with her body.
For a brief moment, her mother smiled.
“Good,” she murmured.
Ivy felt the warmth of pride blossom in her chest.
She would get stronger.
She would surpass even her mother.
"That was a promise."
