SUMMARY
The year is 47 AC. The Red Keep is finished—a labyrinth of pale red stone and fresh blood. To celebrate the completion of his fortress and to silence the whispers of his failing lineage, Maegor the Cruel has claimed his "Black Brides." Three widows of his enemies, wed in a single day of forced vows, now sit at a table of ghosts. The "King’s Justice" has already claimed the lives of the masons who built these walls; now, the King’s desperation for an heir turns toward the women he has shackled to his throne. In this hall, the only thing louder than the crackle of the hearth is the screaming silence of women who have learned that to speak is to die.

She spoke no word; she had learned that in this castle, the stone itself had ears, and Tyanna’s smile was a whetstone for the King’s axe.
