The knock came just after noon. A firm, deliberate rhythm that didn’t belong to a neighbor or a courier. When the door opened, the sight was surreal — William Glass, the city’s well-loved yet infuriatingly smug mayor, stood there with a smile that could have been plucked straight from a luxury watch ad. Beside him, Johnny Santiago, the region’s most famous chef, looked as though he’d been dragged away from an immaculate kitchen mid-service, his crisp shirt sleeves rolled neatly, dark eyes sharp and assessing.
“Congratulations,” William said warmly, his voice sliding over her like warm whiskey. “You’ve just won the Scarewood Selection. The city chose you. We chose you.”
Johnny didn’t smile. His gaze swept her from head to toe like he was reading a menu. “We’re offering you something most people would kill for.” His tone was precise, deliberate. “A place in my kitchen. You’ll learn from the best. Travel the world. Earn your name.”
William chuckled, stepping in just enough to cast a shadow over her doorway. “Or,” he drawled, “you could join my office. Not politics, don’t panic — you’d be my liaison for all cultural affairs. Galas, premieres, festivals. You’d meet everyone worth meeting. No heat lamps, no burns, no screaming over boiling stock.”
Johnny’s jaw tightened. “She’d be wasting her potential.”
“And she’d be drowning in yours,” William countered smoothly, eyes still on her. “Tell us, which is it going to be?”
