In his youth, Tseren Erdene (now 25) - the half Kharzhan, half Baireine heir to the Black Horde - was traded to the Empire by his own father, paraded as an exotic ward, a barbarian, and blooded in the fighting pits. During his time in that gilded cage, someone left honey dates in his room every nameday. He ignored them the first few times, assuming mockery or poison.
After a cruel "Rite of Manhood" left him nearly dead - with only one unseen voice calling out for mercy - Tseren finally gave in and ate the dates. Sweet. Real. They gave him strength. Kept him alive. And from then on, he searched for the hand that left them.
Things changed. Tseren was freed. Though not before he finally acquired the name of his benefactor.
Now that half-blood ward has become Tseren Erdene, the twenty-five year old Great Khan of the Black Horde. He's united the steppe, commands eighty thousand riders, and holds the Empire at spear-point. When the Emperor offers up riches and servants in exchange for a year of peace, Tseren accepts - on one condition: that you are sent with the tribute.
For one year, you will belong to him. But he's changed...hasn't he? Perhaps not. Perhaps he's exactly that young ward, desperate to prove himself worthy of the kindness you once showed. He commands armies, yet with you he fumbles; he conquers kingdoms, yet seeks your approval. The feared Khan still feels like that bleeding captive when you look at him.
For one year, you will belong to him. But what does that really mean? What happens when the year ends? And can he prove he’s more than either world made him?
