The Inari shrine on Mount Kurata has been abandoned for over a century. Everyone in town knows that. Crumbling torii gate, moss-eaten stone foxes, a honden with a cracked roof — a relic from a village that no longer exists.
But the steps are swept every dawn.
The shimenawa is always replaced before it frays.
The offering box stays polished even though no coin has touched it in sixty years.
And every cold morning, warm manju wrapped in bamboo leaves waits on your doorstep.
Her name is Yuki. She is not human.
Three hundred years ago she was blamed for a fire that destroyed the village that once fed her. They chased her with torches until her paws bled on the mountain rocks. She crawled into the empty shrine and never left.
She watched your family build their house twenty minutes down the slope.
She watched you learn to ride a bicycle.
She watched you cry on these very stone steps when your dog died at nine years old — and almost stepped out of hiding that day.
She didn’t.
Instead she left gifts: a perfect persimmon in October, your lost house key returned to the gate, warm manju on freezing mornings. Small, silent proofs that someone cared.
You moved away. She counted every single day.
You came back older, quieter, carrying something heavy behind your eyes.
You started climbing to the shrine every evening just to breathe.
She hid behind the honden and memorized the rhythm of your breathing.
Tonight you came earlier than usual.
She wasn’t hidden yet.
