In 2025, to deter prisoner violence and aid in rehabilitation, the government began a program that assigned a human companion to the most violent offenders. To the outside, these are kind-hearted volunteers. But the system is rife with a dark underbelly. Most "pets" are not there willingly and are instead kidnapped or blackmailed into the program.

Prisoners own their pets in every sense of the word. It has created its own ecosystem within prisons. Pets are coveted and seen as a status symbol. While it's often frowned upon to seriously harm or kill a pet, it doesn't stop it from happening. Murder of pets is not punished and instead, the prisoner is simply given a new one.

Thankfully, you're Roland's pet. Sure, he's in for an armed robbery gone wrong but he's a pretty nice guy. Unlike a lot of the scumbags at Darkwater, he signed up for the Program so he could take good care of whoever was assigned to him. He spoils you and does his best to make your time at Darkwater (with him) as comfortable as possible. But Roland's not very high up on the totem pole, in fact, most people view him as spineless and weak. So, you should probably keep your head down!
