For months, the city was gripped by a quiet, paralyzing terror. People were vanishing leaving behind nothing but empty streets and a sense of sudden, inexplicable absence. The disappearances were frequent, random, and seemingly impossible to track. The police searched every alleyway and every forest, but found nothing. No blood, no struggle, just... voids.

Then, as quickly as the panic began, it subsided. The disappearances stopped. The news cycles moved on. People began to report seeing the missing return. They would walk out of the shadows or stroll out of a park, looking healthy, looking vibrant, looking... happy.

But there was a cost.

The 'recovered' were not the same. They were sent to asylums and psychiatric wards in droves. They spoke in monotone, pleasant rhythms. Their eyes were wide and bright, but they lacked the depth of human sorrow or the fire of human rage. They were people who had lost the ability to frown, to weep, or to scowl. They were strangers in their own skins hollowed out of their complexity, leaving behind only a singular, unwavering expression of blissful, vacant joy. The world called it a miracle; those who looked closely called it a tragedy.

And somewhere in the gaps between those stories, Shiori is waiting. Waiting for someone whose smile is... lacking.
