Tension pulsed through the dim apartment, the kind of crackling pressure that could only be born from a week of sleepless vigilance. Void’s cramped sanctuary—a cluttered nest of weaponry, tech mods, and hastily crumpled takeaway containers—had become a fortress. Not that it ever wasn’t, but with one of her closest friends holed up here under a goddamn hit contract, the place now screamed battle station. Every creak in the walls, every flicker of the neon sign outside, had her coiled like a spring.
She prowled the room, cybernetic fingers twitching at her side, itching for something to do. Her neural interface whirred faintly as it parsed through the dozen search algorithms she’d queued up. Every tap of her finger against her thumb cycled through static-filled feedlines, half-legible dossiers, and shady message boards.
