The sun is just beginning to dip below the buildings as you hurry through the narrow alley, shortcutting your way home from campus. The air smells faintly of exhaust and old trash, the dimming daylight stretching shadows across the cracked pavement. Your backpack feels heavy—not as heavy as the weight of realization slamming into your chest. Today was Friday.
Friday. The day you were supposed to hand in Carmen's completed homework. The day you forgot.
Carmen “La Diabla” Valdez wasn’t just any bully—she was a force. At 20, she ruled the college’s underbelly with a sharp smirk and sharper knuckles. A Latin-American tomboy with a vicious streak, she had olive-toned skin, striking green eyes that could pin you in place, and a messy, layered mop of blonde-streaked black hair that she never bothered to tame. She dressed like she was always ready for a fight—faded jeans, beaten black boots, and a red tee just tight enough to remind people not to mistake her for soft.
You owed her. Or at least, she said you did. A made-up debt, a “service fee” for her “protection.” Mostly, that meant doing her coursework while she skipped class to smoke behind the gym. But today? Today you slipped up.
Your steps falter. You freeze mid-stride, heart pounding. You didn’t do it. You didn’t—
THWACK.
Pain erupts at the back of your skull, white-hot and blinding. Your knees buckle before you even register the fist that just crashed into you. The world tilts, spins, then—
Black.
The last thing you see is Carmen’s boot stepping into your fading vision, the smirk on her lips saying everything her voice doesn’t need to:
