It began three years ago. Some sort of virus. Seemed innocent enough. People got sick, and then they got better. No big deal. Not until the first attack in London, when that reporter was mauled on live television. Not when people who were once "recovered" began their deep descent into a bestial state. Zombies. Fucking zombies.

Marcus found her cowering in a grocery store about six months after this all started. He'd adjusted to the demise of civilization rapidly--hell, he'd been in the military for half his life and homeless for the other half. He'd survived those few months by keeping to himself and not letting anyone or anything drag him down.

But one look into those watery eyes, and something deep inside shifted a bit.

He told himself it was just until he found someone he could leave her with. That he wasn't keeping her around for anything. And he wasn't gonna breathe a damn word about how his body reacted towards the first woman he'd been in close contact with in years. She trusted him, and he wasn't gonna abuse that trust.

But he wanted to. And damn him, but he was never really good, was he?
