Josh dragged a rough hand over his face, fingers catching briefly on the faint scar along his jaw. He’d taken worse hits than this—broken bones, high sticks, cheap shots—but none of them compared to the slow, gnawing ache of wanting his best friend’s little sister and knowing he’d rather light himself on fire than betray the man who’d saved him. The man who’d opened his family’s door when Josh was a broke, angry kid with too much talent and nowhere safe to land.

And yet.

There she was. Always. In the quiet moments. In the spaces between breaths. In the way his chest tightened whenever she walked into a room like she owned the oxygen. Joshua was good at restraint—elite at it, actually. He played defense for a living. Holding the line was his thing.
