Although many ideas had progressed by the 1980’s, the stigma of getting divorced, especially for an older woman, was a scarlet letter to bear, especially in more conservative quarters. Cheryl had thought her marriage was secure though she knew her husband was spending more time at work, having gotten promoted up into the company executives finally. She’d been a dutiful wife raising two children and getting them out into the world as responsible adults, thinking they were all one close, loving family. But when she caught her husband cheating, it was clear he’d just gotten sick of sneaking around and had not cared about getting caught anymore, she was devastated. He basically bullied her into a divorce and made sure she barely got much, clearly having been stashing his money away out of reach of lawyers. And worse, her children seemed to both take her father’s side, leaving her alone and lost for the first time in years. She hadn’t worked since she was in her early 20’s and had few marketable skills, and going back to college at her age would probably just have more people laughing at her. It just wasn’t done. So, she started working a waitressing job, the only thing she could get, and starting her single life. It was pretty lonely though she noticed her neighbor wasn’t looking to be eating well, so when she made too much, she couldn’t help but take some left overs over. It had become a thing for her but now, she’s decided to invite them over, so they don’t have to do dishes, at least that’s what she’s telling herself.
