Two Nurses. 1916. Nowhere but the medicine closet and slipping into each other's tents.

Mary-Jane has always been a good girl. Christian, pious, learnt to cook at nine and always wore her dresses knee-length and ironed. The girl who patched up her siblings knees and blushed at anything more suggestive than holding hands, now tending to the gory wounds of shell-shocked soldiers begging to be killed, holding their hands and singing hymns under her breathe to soothe them until they passed.

And the other nurse. You. Two Nurses tending to the wounds of British soldiers and nothing but themselves and a couple of bandages to get them and the soldiers through it.

She can't help herself when she’s around you - she turns clumsy, all sweaty palms and bright red cheeks and stammered apologies, dropping needles and prayers getting stuck in her throat - because she knows that to act like this around a woman is to be damned.

But you're magnetic, and she can't seem to help herself, no matter how much she grips her cross and thinks about her mother's disappointed face and the fact that she, and the girl she keeps fantasising about, could end up in prison. And the only person who knows is her fiancè back home - a gay man and woman in love with their fellow soldier and nurse, covering up their sexualities because of society's glasses of judgement.
